The two-week trip across the entire North. Galicia coast and capes. Cross into Northern Portugal for the Minho, Peneda-Gerês, and the Douro Valley. Back to Spain via Trás-os-Montes and the Sil canyon. Up to the Asturian coast and into the Picos de Europa. Return via the Camino de Santiago. Every region of Northern Iberia in one loop, with paradores and pousadas the whole way through.

Arrival & welcome · Vigo/Nigrán

Airport transfer · Evening

Route: 60-minute orientation: bike, panniers, GPS, route briefing, insurance, gear check.

Highlights: Welcome dinner together in Vigo with the route walk-through.

Hotel: Vigo/Nigrán.

Pickup: SCQ or OPO airport pickup; transfer to Vigo/Nigrán.

Costa da Morte loop · Vigo/Nigrán → Fisterra → Vigo/Nigrán

~350 km · 5–6 hours

Route: AC-543 to Negreira, AC-552 along the wild Atlantic to Cabo Fisterra. Return inland via Brion.

Highlights: Cabo Fisterra lighthouse — end of the world. Combarro’s granite hórreos.

Recommended: O Centolo in Fisterra — seafood at the cape.

Difficulty: Easy. Warm-up day.

Hotel: Vigo/Nigrán (return).

Rías Baixas coast · Vigo/Nigrán → Cambados > O Grove

~70 km · 3 hours (light day)

Route: South via AP-9, AC-305 coastal road through Vilagarcía, Cambados, A Lanzada beach, Illa da Toxa.

Highlights: Albariño tasting at Bodegas Martín Códax. Oyster bars in O Grove.

Recommended: Pepe Vieira (1 Michelin star) if pre-booked, or any pulpería in Cambados.

Difficulty: Easy.

Hotel: O Grove / Illa da Toxa.

Across to Portugal · O Grove > Tui > Viana do Castelo

~130 km · 3–4 hours

Route: South via Pontevedra and Vigo. Cross the Miño at Tui/Valença. South to Viana via Caminha.

Highlights: Twin fortresses at Tui/Valença, Atlantic at Caminha, Santa Luzia hilltop sanctuary above Viana.

Recommended: Caminha riverfront — grilled fish.

Difficulty: Easy.

Hotel: Viana do Castelo.

Into Peneda-Gerês · Viana > Braga > Amares

~150 km · 4–5 hours

Route: East via N201 to Ponte de Lima, N101/N304 to Braga, N308 into Peneda-Gerês NP.

Highlights: Ponte de Lima riverfront, Bom Jesus do Monte, alpine roads in Gerês NP, wild horses.

Recommended: Ponte de Lima — Açude in the old town.

Difficulty: Moderate. Park switchbacks.

Hotel: Amares (Peneda-Gerês).

To the Douro · Amares > Chaves > Douro Valley

~210 km · 5 hours

Route: East across Trás-os-Montes via Vila Real on IP3, then south on the legendary N222 to Régua.

Highlights: Chaves Roman bridge, Vila Real noble mansions, the N222 — voted one of the world’s best driving roads.

Recommended: Vila Real — Terra de Montanha for Trás-os-Montes food.

Difficulty: Moderate. The famous N222 twisties.

Hotel: Pinhão (Douro Valley).

Douro wine day · Vineyards, river, port

~140 km loop · 4 hours (rest day)

Route: Pinhão up N323-3 to Sabrosa, across to Casal de Loivos for the panorama, down to Régua, N222 east to Pocinho and back.

Highlights: Casal de Loivos viewpoint, Quinta do Crasto port tasting, Foz Tua railway bridge.

Recommended: DOC by chef Rui Paula on the riverbank in Folgosa.

Difficulty: Easy. Photos and wine.

Hotel: Same as Day 6. Port tasting on the terrace on the terrace.

Back across the border · Douro > Bragança > Verín

~260 km · 5–6 hours

Route: North on N212 then IP4 across Trás-os-Montes to Bragança, cross back into Spain at Verín.

Highlights: Bragança citadel, wide empty roads of inland Portugal, the spa town of Verín.

Recommended: Solar Bragançano in Bragança — game and chestnut dishes.

Difficulty: Moderate. Long day on empty roads.

Hotel: Verín.

Into the Ribeira Sacra · Verín > Ourense > Santo Estevo

~150 km · 4 hours

Route: N-525 north to Ourense, south of the river to follow the Sil canyon through Parada de Sil and Castro Caldelas.

Highlights: Ourense hot springs (Termas de Outariz — free), Sil canyon viewpoints, Romanesque monasteries hidden in the hills.

Recommended: Restaurante Nova in Ourense — modern Galician.

Difficulty: Moderate. Tight switchbacks above the Sil.

Hotel: Nogueira de Ramuín (Ribeira Sacra).

To the north coast · Ribeira Sacra > Lugo > Ribadeo

~280 km · 5–6 hours

Route: Out of the canyon north through Monforte de Lemos, on to Lugo (Roman walls), then N-640 to Ribadeo.

Highlights: Lugo’s intact Roman walls (UNESCO), the Eo estuary at Ribadeo, Praia das Catedrais.

Recommended: Lugo old town — Mesón de Alberto for classic Galician.

Difficulty: Moderate. Mix of highway and back roads.

Hotel: Ribadeo.

Asturian coast · Ribadeo > Luarca > Gijón > Llanes

~250 km · 5 hours

Route: N-634 and small coastal roads through Luarca, Cudillero (painted houses), Gijón, east to Llanes.

Highlights: Luarca old port, Cudillero painted houses, Gijón seafront, the coast east of Ribadesella.

Recommended: Cudillero — any seafront pulpería.

Difficulty: Moderate. Coastal sweepers.

Hotel: Llanes (Asturias).

Into the Picos de Europa · Llanes > Covadonga > Potes

~180 km · 4–5 hours

Route: Inland from Llanes via Covadonga sanctuary + lakes detour, through the Picos via Panes and the Desfiladero de la Hermida gorge to Potes.

Highlights: Covadonga lakes, Hermida gorge (one of Europe’s great motorcycle canyons), Potes village.

Recommended: La Cabaña Asturiana en route, or Casa Cayo in Potes.

Difficulty: Challenging. Mountain switchbacks, tight gorges. Some of the best riding of the trip.

Hotel: Potes (Picos de Europa).

Picos rest day · Potes cable car & Liébana loop

~80–120 km optional · Easy day

Route: Potes cable car up to the high peaks. Afternoon ride to Lebéna Romanesque church or Mirador del Cable. Or rest.

Highlights: Cable car summit views (2,000m+), Liébana valley, the 10th-century Mozarabic church of Lebéna.

Recommended: Mesón Aliva at the cable car summit, or Casa Cayo in Potes.

Difficulty: Whatever you want it to be.

Hotel: Potes (Picos de Europa) (return).

The Camino home · Potes > León > O Cebreiro > Santiago

~520 km · Full day — long but legendary

Route: South from Potes via Riaño into León. Then west on the Camino de Santiago over O Cebreiro pass into Galicia, on to Lugo and Santiago.

Highlights: Riaño reservoir, León cathedral (lunch stop), O Cebreiro mountain village, the pilgrim approach to Santiago.

Recommended: León — Cocinandos (1 Michelin star) or any mesón on Calle Ancha.

Difficulty: Moderate–challenging. Longest day. One-way drop in León (saves ~330 km, +€150) or Bilbao (full coast finish, +€200) available.

Hotel: Vigo/Nigrán. Farewell dinner in Vigo.

Airport transfer · Morning

Route: Transfer to SCQ or OPO airport for outbound flight.

Highlights: Optional: add 2 nights in Santiago to walk the cathedral and watch the botafumeiro.

Bike drop: Morning return at the rental office, paperwork, final coffee.
